Mayfield, KY - Lyon College (11-3; 2-0 TSAC) led 30-19 at halftime and stretched its lead to 24 points, 69-45 with 2:45 left in the game enroute to a 74-59 TranSouth conference women's basketball victory over Mid-Continent University (1-12; 0-2 TSAC) Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Mayfield High School Sports Arena. Next on the schedule, MCU hosts Martin Methodist College for a TSAC game at Paducah Tilghman High School, Thursday, Jan. 14, at 6:00 p.m.
Sophomore forward Amanda Daugherty (Golconda, IL/Pope County HS) recorded a double-double with 16 points, 10 in the second half, and 10 rebounds and also stole the ball from Lyon four times, and junior guard Tiffany Payton (Wadesville, IN/Mater Dei HS/Kaskaskia College, IL) led the Lady Cougars with 17 points, 12 in the second half, 3 three-pointers and 2 steals. Lyon forward Lauren Ramsey led the Pipers with 17 points, 15 in the second half, and grabbed 6 rebounds, and guard Syeeda Echols added 10 points, 2 three-pointers, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
MCU led 13-10 with 13:42 left in the first half and the score was knotted at 15-15 with 6:56 left. From that point, Mid-Continent scored just one field goal in the next 6:38 while Lyon scored 15 points lead30-19 at halftime. MCU shot just .250 from the field (6-24) with just one three-point field goal and committed 16 turnovers in the first half while the Pipers shot .345 (10-29) with 6 three-pointers and 12 turnovers.
Lyon gradually pulled away from MCU in the second half, taking a 53-31 lead with 7:54 left and led by as many as 24 points, 65-49, with 2:45 remaining in the game.
MCU shot .327 from the field (18-55), made 7 of 20 three-pointers (.350) and 16 of 23 free throws (.696) for the game and finished with 24 turnovers and 10 steals. Lyon shot .424 from the field (25-59), nailed 6 of 17 three-pointers (.353) and 18 of 25 free throws (.720) and committed 22 turnovers. Both teams hauled in 40 rebounds.
Supporting the efforts of Daugherty and Payton, junior forward Katie Perry (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian School) contributed 8 points, 12 rebounds and 3 steals before fouling out late in the game, and junior guard Lindsey Davis (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown HS/ Kaskaskia College, IL) totaled 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and one steal. Reserve guard Jean-Ann Riley (Mayfield, KY/Graves County HS) tossed in 2 three-pointers for 6 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.
Besides double-figure efforts by Ramsey and Echols, All-America and All-TSAC forward K.K. Hodges added 8 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal, and guardChristine Smith added 8 points with 4 assists.
