Paducah, KY - Mid-Continent University (1-13, 0-3 TSAC) led 34-32 at halftime, but Martin Methodist College (9-6; 1-1 TSAC) outscored the Lady Cougars, 40-29, in the second half and pulled away to a 72-63 TranSouth conference women's basketball victory, Thursday, Jan. 14, at Paducah Tilghman High School. Next on the schedule, MCU meets the nation's number one NAIA team, Union University, for a TSAC game in Jackson, Tennessee, Monday, Jan. 18, at 6:00 p.m.
Martin Methodist forward Micah Anderson totaled 30 points, 22 in the second half, and made 16 of 17 free throws, including 14 of 15 in the second half, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Forward Whitney Robison added 24 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
MCU's senior center Kandi Knupp (Iuka, MS/Tishomingo County HS/N.E. Mississippi CC) scored a season-high 20 points on 7 of 9 shots and 6 of 6 free throws, blocked 4 shots, grabbed 4 rebounds and stole the ball twice before fouling out late in the contest, and junior guard Tiffany Payton (Wadesville, IN/Mater Dei HS/Kaskaskia College, IL)totaled 16 points, 2 three-pointers, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Sophomore forward Amanda Daugherty (Golconda, IL/Pope County HS) contributed 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal, and junior reserve guard Lindsey Davis (Charlestown, IN/Charlestown HS/ Kaskaskia College, IL) totaled just 2 points but contributed 4 rebounds and 7 assists.
A close first half featured five ties and nine lead changes with both teams gaining four-point leads. Daugherty made two free throws with 12 seconds left giving the Cougars a 34-32 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Martin Methodist scored eight consecutive points in a span of two minutes and led 46-38 with 15:45 remaining. After MCU cut MMC's lead to 50-47 with 11:07 left, the RedHawks responded with 11 consecutive points, five by Robison, and took a 61-47 lead with 7:28 left in the game. The Cougars closed to within seven points, 62-55, with 5:27 left but drew no closer. MCU shot just .280 from the field (7-28) while MMC shot .458 (11-24) in the second half (7-25). The Cougars made 15 of 19 free throws (.789) while the RedHawks made 17 of 22 (.773).
MCU shot .404 from the field for the game (21-52), made 3 of 11 three-pointers (.273) and a fine 18 of 23 free throws (.783) and finished with 24 turnovers and 10 steals. Martin Methodist shot .390 from the field (23-59), nailed 3 of 14 three-pointers (.214) and 23 of 29 free throws (.793) and also committed 24 turnovers. MMC outrebounded MCU, 40-29, and stole the ball 12 times, four times by guard Jessy Christopher.
