Mayfield, KY - Mid-Continent University men's soccer coach David Oesch has signed goalkeeper Juan Herrera, a 2010 graduate of Nimitz High School in Houston, Texas to a letter of intent to play for the Cougars beginning with the upcoming 2010-11 season.
Herrera, 5-10, 180, played fullback for the Nimitz High School varsity football team for two seasons and was coached by Salvador Fernandez for four seasons of varsity soccer. During his senior season, Herrera allowed just 13 goals in 15 matches (0.87 goals against average), won his team's Coach's Award, and earned All-District 19-5A honorable mention honors. He was Nimitz' Most Valuable Player as a sophomore and junior. With Herrera in goal in 2009, Nimitz soccer advanced to its first post-season playoff appearance in nine seasons.
Herrera also played for Kingwood Alliance, a club team coached by Eddie Perez, and helped the team win the South Texas Cup championship in 2008-09.
A fine student, Herrera also was a Health Occupations Student of America (HOSA) participant and placed fourth in his district competition and obtained his Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license during his senior year.
"Juan is a great addition to the Mid-Continent University family," says Coach Oesch. "I am very excited that Juan has chosen to commit to our university. I know he will rise to every challenge that is placed before him. We look to him this year to help strengthen our roster, and I believe that Juan has a big future here at MCU."
