MAYFIELD, Ky. - Mid-Continent University defeated visiting Fisk University (TN), three sets to none, by scores of 25-12, 25-12, 25-9, in its 2010 collegiate women's volleyball season opener, Friday, August 27, at MCU's Cougar Center on campus. The crowd of nearly 200 witnessed a bit of history as the Lady Cougars won a season opener for the first time in their eight-year volleyball history.
MCU hosts Williams Baptist College from Walnut Ridge, Arkansas for two matches on Saturday, August 28, in the Cougar Center at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., and begins the TranSouth Athletics Conference schedule with a home match against Cumberland University, Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 6:00 p.m.
Mid-Continent (1-0) totaled 28 kills with just eight errors in 72 total attacks and served 11 aces against Fisk (0-2), and the Cougars benefited greatly from 19 Fisk kill errors and 6 net violations. The Bulldogs totaled just nine kills in 58 chances and managed just 19 digs. MCU steadily pulled away from a 4-4 tie early in set one and led 16-6, 22-8, and 24-10. In set two, MCU went from a 7-7 tie to a 23-10 lead, and MCU began set three with an 11-1 lead and later led 16-3, 20-4, and won the decisive game, 25-9.

Katie Perry (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian School), pictured above on the right, an All-TSAC honorable mention selection last season, led MCU with 9 kills and 2 solo blocks, and sophomore outside hitter Kristin Selph (Jackson, TN/Liberty HS), pictured on the left, added 7 kills with just one error, 3 service aces and 6 digs on defense. Senior
outside hitter Tiffany Payton (Wadesville, IN/Mater Dei HS (Evansville)/Kaskaskia College, IL), an All-TSAC honorable mention selection last season, finished with 6 kills, 7 digs and one service ace.

Fisk was led offensively by E'Tasha Keeton and Jazmine Green with 4 kills each. Green also led the Bulldogs with 5 digs, and recorded a solo block.
