Coach David Oesch coached first match at MCU, Aug. 27
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior defender Jonny Fairbairn headed home a well-placed free kick in the 30th minute of play, and nationally-ranked William Carey University (1-0) made the goal stand up in a 1-0 season-opening men's soccer victory over visiting Mid-Continent University (0-1), in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Friday, August 27.  The match also marked the beginning of the David Oesch (pictured on the right) coaching era of MCU soccer.
 
    MCU takes on 16th-ranked Texas-Brownsville (0-0) on Saturday, August 28, at 3:00 p.m., at William Carey University in Hattiesburg.
 
Andres Blanco    William Carey, ranked number 19 in the NAIA pre-season coaches' poll, outshot MCU, 11-2, overall and 3-2 in shots on goal.  The hosts attempted three corner kicks while MCU tried none.  MCU's freshman goalkeeper Andres Blanco (Valencia, Spain), pictured on the left, made his collegiate debut and saved two shots on goal, one in each half.  Blanco allowed the only goal of the game by Fairbairn off a free-kick assist by senior defender Joseph McNiell in the 30th minute of the first half.
 
    WCU's senior goalkeeper Carl Goody saved both MCU shots on goal he faced, both in the first half.
