HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After trailing 1-0 since the 23rd minute of its match against nationally-ranked University of Texas at Brownsville, Mid-Continent scored the tying goal in the 88th minute of regulation time of a 1-1 double-overtime tie in August 28 collegiate men's soccer action at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Both sides own 0-1-1 records so far this season.
The Cougars return to action at the Bryan College Classic in Dayton, Tennessee next weekend, meeting Cedarville College (OH), Friday, Sept. 3, and Bryan College, Saturday, Sept. 4, both at 6:30 p.m. Central time.
On a stormy afternoon in southern Mississippi, the sides battled the rain and a sloppy field as well as each other as they were whistled for a combined 39 fouls, including 21 by Mid-Continent. Texas-Brownsville, ranked 16th in the NAIA pre-season coaches' poll, outshot MCU, 10-2, in the first half and drew first blood on the scoreboard when midfielder Steve Howard nailed a penalty kick in the 23rd minute.
UTB appeared to be on its way to a narrow victory, but MCU midfielder Mauricio DaSilva (Porto Alegre, Brazil), pictured above on the right, took a pass from junior defender Joel Cooley (Nebraska City, NE/Nebraska City HS), pictured on the left, and booted home a 25-foot right-footed shot in the 88th minute of regulation time and forced two 10-minute overtime periods. Cooley's assist was his first point in three seasons at Mid-Continent, and DaSilva earned his first collegiate goal.
MCU's defense stiffened in overtime and allowed just two shots in the first 10-minute period and none in the second extra frame, while the Cougars attempted four shots in the first extra period. UTB outshot MCU, 15-9, and attempted 6 shots on goal while MCU tried five. UTB also led 5-3 in corner kicks. MCU's freshman goalkeeper Andres Blanco (Valencia, Spain) saved 5 shots on goal, four in the first half, and UTB's goalkeeper Juan Gamboa saved four shots on goal, including two saves in the first 10-minute overtime.
