DAYTON, Tenn. - Bryan College (1-1-1) scored three goals in each half enroute to a 6-1 victory over visiting Mid-Continent University (1-2-1), Saturday, September 4, in collegiate men's soccer action in Dayton, Tennessee. Six Bryan players scored goals and five others were credited with assists. Bryan became the sixth team in 11 years of MCU soccer history to score a record six goals in a match against the Cougars.
MCU next travels to Wilmore, Kentucky for a 4:00 p.m. Central time match at Asbury University, Tuesday, September 7.
Bryan outshot Mid-Continent, 9-4, in the first 45 minutes and scored three goals on its first seven shots on goal, while MCU scored one of its three shots on goal. Bryan scored just 3:12 into the match when junior defender Jonathan Houghton kicked in a pass from senior midfielder Bennie Bardales, and then made it 2-0 at 25:08 when freshman midfielder Jorge Gonzalez kicked in a goal off an assist by sophomore midfielder Johannes Muller. Bryan made it 3-0 at 34:39 when senior midfielder Joseph Jones headed home an assist from sophomore midfielder Tom Hemmings.
Friday night's hero for Mid-Continent, senior defender Keane Bennett (Jamaica) pared Bryan's lead to 3-1 with an unassisted effort at 36:51, his second goal of the season. Bennett scored the Cougars' match-winner in the last minute of the second overtime to defeat Cedarville, 3-2, at Bryan, Sept. 3.
Bryan added a penalty kick by junior defender Harry Sherwood at 49:40 of the second half on a hard foul in the penalty area, and led 5-1 at 52:51 after a goal by senior defender Daniel O'Kane with an assist from senior forward Ricky Angel. Bryan tacked on a sixth goal at 87:37 when sophomore midfielder Richard Kirk scored off an assist by senior forward Curt Hays.
MCU's freshman goalkeeper Andres Blanco (Valencia, Spain) saved two of the 10 shots on goal he faced, and defenders made three other saves, and Bryan goalkeeper Rodrigo Pigatto saved three MCU shots on goal while allowing just the one first-half goal. For the game, Bryan edged MCU, 14-13, in shots, and the teams combined for 42 fouls, 21 by each side.
