JACKSON,Tenn. - The game of basketball can be fickle sometimes, a fact the Mid-Continent University men's basketball team found out on Monday night.
In the opening 20 minutes, the Cougars (2-15, 1-3) played with great energy and the bounces seemed to go their way, but after intermission, the tide turned, as the Union University Bulldogs (11-7, 4-1) used a 20-1 run to grab a comeback win from Mid-Continent 91-69.The game was nip-and-tuck affair for much of the first half, with Union holding the lead through the early stages of the game, though never by more than six points. Midway through the period, the Cougars began to inch closer, and with just under five minutes remaining,
Reggie Elkins stole the ball and served up an alley-oop pass to
Chris Ferguson, putting the Cougars in front 28-27. The Cougars would eventually see their lead swell to as many as eight points, but Union closed the half on a 6-0 run and at the break, the Cougars lead was just two, 32-30. Union played with more energy in the second half, reclaiming the lead early, though again the Cougars held it close. With 11:54 to play,
Chris Tillman scored to pull the Cougars to within a bucket at 52-50, and then the wheels fell off. Over the next 6:39, the Cougars could not buy a basket, as Union mounted a 20-1 run that essentially put the game away. Mid-Continent would not close the gap any closer than 17 points in the final 5:15 of the game, as Union grabbed their fourth TranSouth win of the year.
Ferguson was able to post his second double double of the season, pouring in 16 points and notching 10 rebounds, and he was joined in double figures offensively by Tillman and
Antonio Davis who each scored 13. Elkins grabbed four steals in the game for the Cougars as well. As a team, the Cougars hit 25-of-66 shots (37.9%), but only 3-of-20 (15%) from long distance. Mid-Continent did shoot 80-percent from the free throw line in the contest, knocking down 16-of-20 charity tosses.
The Cougars return home on Thursday night, playing host to Bethel University (12-6, 2-2) at 8 p.m. at Mayfield High School Sports Arena.
