Women's Basketball - Fri, Jan 20, 2012
MAYFIELD, Ky.. - The Mid-Continent University women's basketball team knew coming into this week that it would be a tough one. On Thursday evening, the Cougars took on the Bethel Wildcats in their only home tilt of the week, but they could not pull out a victory.

Bethel (10-9, 2-3) out-rebounded the Cougars (6-12, 1-4) 55-27 in the game, and hit over 50-percent of their three point field goals en route to the 85-63 win. The Wildcats sprinted out of the gate, quickly building a nine-point advantage at 13-4 with just over six minutes elapsed in the game. Mid-Continent pulled to within five at 14-9 when Breona Houston completed a three-point play at the 12:48 mark, but the Wildcats responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:17 to stretch their advantage to 24-9. As the half wore on, the Wildcats continued to push their lead out, with it reaching a 27 point margin at 47-20 with just 1:11 to play in the period. The Cougars closed the half on a 5-0 run, but still found themselves in a deep hole at halftime, trailing 47-25. In the second half, the Cougars fought hard to get back in the game, and it looked as though they might on several occasions. Mid-Continent closed the gap to 15 at the 16:07 mark, and with foul trouble mounting for the Wildcats, Chantiera Johnson pulled the Cougars to within 14 with 10:27 to play. That was as close as the Cougars would get however, as Bethel regained their composure and went to work on the clock, slowly stretching their lead back out and taking the win 85-63.

Johnson led the Cougars offensively with 17 points, and Houston chipped in 10 more of her own. Asia Grigsby added nine, wne Shanice Martin and Stephanie Malone each poured in eight in the game. Johnson also led the way with six rebounds and three steals. As a team, the Cougars struggled shooting the basketball. Mid-Continent hit 21-of-58 (36.2%) shots, but connected on just 3-of-14 (21.4%) threes and managed to hit only 18 of their 34 free throws (52.9%).

The schedule does not get any easier on the Cougars as they wrap up the week with a road trip to NAIA #1 Freed-Hardeman (17-2, 5-0) - a team that enters the contest on a 17-game winning streak -  on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game can be heard via a live audio stream on the Cougars' website.
