MAYFIELD, Ky. - Rain has been known to affect many a sporting event throughout the years, however basketball games are usually safe from the weather.
On Thursday evening, that was not the case.
Rain - or more specifically a leaky roof - caused the men's basketball game between the Mid-Continent University Cougars and Blue Mountain Toppers to be relocated from the spacious Mayfield High School Sports Arena into the cozy confines of the Cougar Center on the Mid-Continent campus, and the Cougars took advantage of the familiar surroundings.
Marcus Bowins led the Cougars with 20 points, feeding off the energy of the crowd to bury six three-pointers in the game, as Mid-Continent (4-16, 3-4) cruised to an 84-66 win over the Toppers (7-12, 0-7).
The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes as the game staff was forced to relocate for the contest, but when the game did tip, the Cougars were ready. With the arena buzzing, the Cougars ripped off an 8-0 run over the game's first 1:37. Blue Mountain cut the advantage to three points at 13-10, but the Cougars used another 8-0 spurt to push their lead to 11 at 21-10.
Marcus Bowins buried four long range bombs in the opening 20 minutes - with his teammates combining for another four three-balls, and at the break, the Cougars held a comfortable edge, leading 46-25.
Bowins continued his hot shooting early in the second half, connecting twice more from beyond the arc, with his final three-pointer pushing the Cougars' lead to 31 points with 12:13 to play. The Toppers tried to mount a charge late in the second half, putting on full-court pressure for much of the game's final 10 minutes in an effort to break the Cougars' offensive rhythm, but to no avail. Blue Mountain would get no closer than 13 points, and the Cougars criused to the 18-point win, 84-66.
Bowins scored 20 of the Cougars' 31 points off the bench, leading the team's scorers in the process.
Steve McBorrough scored 16 on 7-of-10 shooting, while
Antonio Davis also found his way into double figures, netting 14 points in the contest.
Brent Butler grabbed eight boards on the night, with
Chris Ferguson adding seven rebounds and
Ryan Randolph chipping in a pair of blocked shots. The Cougars scored on 33-of-64 (51.6%) field goal attempts, including knocking down a blistering 55-percent of their threes (11-of-20). The lone area of shooting disappointment for the Cougars came at the foul line, where they hit just 7-of-15 (46.7%) free throws in the game.
The win marks the first time this season, the Cougars have notched back-to-back victories, and Mid-Continent will be looking to push their winning streak to three on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars will welcome the Cumberland Bulldogs (13-6, 4-3) - who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA men's basketball poll - to Mayfield for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
