MAYFIELD, Ky. - It was a much better showing for the Mid-Continent University men's hoops team the second time around against Martin Methodist. However, the Cougars were unable to cash that effort into a victory on Thursday night.

Mid-Continent (6-18, 5-6) had their chances to pull the win out, but missed opportunities characterized their night, as the Martin Methodist RedHawks (19-5, 8-2) hung on late for the 83-73 win.

The RedHawks started fast in the opening period, building a quick 12-3 lead, but the Cougars would battle back. Mid-Continent to six points at 16-10 with 12:53 to play. Martin Methodist pushed the lead out to 12 points just over four minutes later, claiming a 28-16 lead. Again, Mid-Continent clawed their way back, using a 15-2 run to claim the lead 31-30. However, the RedHawks would finish the half on a 13-4 spurt, taking a 43-35 lead into the break. Martin Methodist scored the first four points of the second stanza, but the Cougars quickly cut the deficit under 10 points, where it would remain for much of the half. The Cougars got as close as four points with 11:34 left in the game, but that would be as close at the Cougars could get. Martin Methodist held off the Cougars' charge down the stretch, pulling out the win 83-73.

Chris Ferguson and Charles Peden each posted double-doubles for Mid-Continent in the game, the fourth such game for Ferguson and the fifth for Peden. Ferguson scored 24 points and grabbed 16 rebounds - both game highs - while Peden poured in 20 markers and brought down 13 boards. Ferguson also blocked three shots in the contest. The Cougars hit 29 of their 76 shots (38.2%) from the floor, but connected on only 4-of-17 (23.5%) three pointers. The Cougars also made just 11-of-18 (61.1%) foul shots.

Mid-Continent will hit the road for a pivotal TranSouth contest on Monday night. The Cougars will head to McKenzie, Tenn. to take on the Bethel University Wildcats (14-10, 4-6) in a game that has major TranSouth tournament seeding implications.
