[Men's Basketball] Bennett Resigns as Men's Basketball Coach

Winston Bennett announced on Monday that he is resigning as head men's basketball coach at Mid-Continent University, effective June 30. Coach Bennett intends to continue to pursue his passion as an author and Christian motivational speaker, and does not rule out coaching again in the future.

MAYFIELD, Ky. – The Mid-Continent University athletic department has announced that Tyler Owen will become the fifth head coach in Mid-Continent baseball history, removing the 'Interim' tag on Friday. Owen has spent the last four seasons on the Mid-Continent staff, serving as an assistant during the most successful four-year run in MCU history and finishing the 2013 season as the team's interim leader. He follows in the footsteps of Shawn Yarbrough (2009-13), William Russell (2005-08), Jim Railey (2004), and Seth Zartman (2000-03) as the bench boss of the Cougars.

NASHVILLE - Mid-Continent University sports information director Tim Shay has been voted the 2013 TranSouth Athletic Conference SID of the Year.

Over the last year Tim has worked as the SID at Mid-Continent University while also contributing to the TSAC, the NAIA, the NCCAA Mid-East Region, CoSIDA, and the NCCAA.

[Softball] Season Ends with Loss to Martin Methodist (Tenn.)

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Mid-Continent University softball team took to the field at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex on Thursday evening knowing that their season was on the line. Their opponent was a Martin Methodist College squad that had just played, and lost, a close game prior to taking the field against the Cougars.

In the end, the game mirrored the Mid-Continent season - the Cougars fought hard and competed well, but they came up just short.

Martin Methodist (29-21) used two-run homers in the first and third innings, and a pair of runs in the fourth to defeat Mid-Continent (13-29) 6-3 and advance in the softball postseason tournament.

[Softball] Bethel Comes From Behind to Down Mid-Continent in Postseason Opener

JACKSON, Tenn. - Coach Christa Franklin and the Mid-Continent University softball team will be glad when they no longer have to deal with Brooklyn Jenkins of Bethel University.

The Cougars (13-28) held a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning of their first round game against Bethel (14-23) in the NAIA Unaffiliated Group tournment for the TranSouth and Gulf Coast Athletic Conferences, but Bethel tied things in the fourth, and in the fifth inning Jenkins hit her fifth home run of the year against Mid-Continent. The blast put Bethel ahead 2-1 on their way to a 5-1 victory to advance in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament which is being held at the West Tennessee Healthcare Sportsplex in Jackson.

MAYFIELD, Ky. - In a lot of ways, the 2013 Mid-Continent University baseball seasondid not go according to plan, yet a pair of Cougars had their on-field accomplishments recognized by the TranSouth Athletic Conference, as well as the Unaffiliated Group with the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Luke Deaton and Hunter Bolden each earned a place on the All-Transouth team, which was voted on by the five TranSouth baseball coaches in a meeting prior to the postseason tournament at Martin Methodist College on Monday evening. In addition, Bolden was named one of three Gold Glove outfielders for not only the TranSouth, but also for the NAIA's postseason Unaffiliated Group which also consisted of three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference teams.

[Baseball] Blue Mountain takes Rain-Soaked Rubber Game to End Mid-Continent's Season

MAYFIELD, Ky. - In the end, the story of the 2013 Mid-Continent University baseball season was very much the same as the story of their final regular season game on Friday: they were good enough to compete, but they were unable to find a way to win.

After a long day full of tarp-pulling and waiting around through rainy weather, Mid-Continent (13-36, 2-10) and the Blue Mountain Toppers (12-37, 2-10) got the rubber-game of their weekend series underway late in the afternoon, and Blue Mountain sprinted to an 8-0 lead before holding on for a 9-5 win. The result pulled the Toppers into a tie for fourth place with the Cougars, and for the second year in a row, the Toppers' season series win gave them the tie-breaker and a trip to the postseason, sending the Cougars home for the summer.

[Baseball] Mid-Continent Splits DH with Blue Mountain; Rubber Match Tomorrow at 2 p.m.

PADUCAH, Ky. - The Mid-Continent University Baseball team had a chance to punch their ticket into the postseason on Thursday evening when they welcomed Blue Mountain College into town for the Cougars' Senior Night festivities. Mid-Continent needed to sweep a twin-bill from the Toppers to clinch the berth, but after a disappointing finish to the night, they are left in a winner-take-all situation on Friday.

Mid-Continent (13-35, 2-9) got some very timely hitting and a gritty performance on the mound from Junior Luke Deaton in game 1, taking the win 4-2 before Blue Mountain (11-37, 1-10) came back to take the nightcap 8-0 thanks to a seven-run surge in the final two innings, setting up a decisive game three in the process.

MAYFIELD, Ky. - The Mid-Continent University softball team entered their final TranSouth double-header of the season with high hopes of building some momentum heading into the postseason. Thursday, however, proved to be a long afternoon for the Cougars.

Mid-Continent (11-27, 3-13) struggled to get the offense on track, tallying just three runs on the day as the Blue Mountain College Toppers (20-18-1, 8-8) swept a double-header from Mid-Continent 8-2 and 9-1.

[Softball] Brueggeman Ties MCU HR Record; Cougars Sweep Lyon in Extra Innings

MAYFIELD, Ky. - Rachel Brueggeman needed nearly two years to hit her first nine home runs as a member of the Mid-Continent University softball team. She needed just one at bat to hit her 10th, tying the Mid-Continent career record.

Brueggeman blasted an 0-1 pitch for a grand slam in the top of the first inning of Mid-Continent's (11-25) double-header, driving in what proved to be the winning run in a 12-3 Mid-Continent win over Lyon College (11-37). The Cougars needed extra innings in game two, but they scored three runs in the top of the eighth to complete the sweep of the twin bill and the season series from the Scots with a 6-3 win.

MAYFIELD, Ky. – The final week of the regular season figures to be a tough one for the Mid-Continent University baseball squad. That is why it was so important for the Cougars to start things off on the right foot.

Mid-Continent (12-34) got great pitching all afternoon as the Cougars opened the final week of the 2013 regular season with a 3-1 win over the Brescia University Bearcats (21-32), taking the season series from the Bearcats in the process, 2-1.

MAYFIELD, Ky. - On a day when the Mid-Continent University softball team their seven seniors, one of them stepped to the forefront.

Rachel Brueggeman homered in each game for Mid-Continent (9-25), but the Cougars managed only a split on Senior Day with the visiting Tennessee Temple University Crusaders (20-15). Mid-Continent took game one 3-2, and Tennessee Temple claimed the second game 5-3.

MAYFIELD, Ky. - The Mid-Continent University softball team is going to be tired of seing rain for quite a while after the way this week played out for the Cougars.

For the second time in three days, the Cougars (8-24) dropped the first game of a double-header on the road, only to see the second game wiped away by rain and lightning. This time, they were on the road at NCAA D-II Union University (19-16) who took the first game on their senior night 8-0 before the storms hit and shortened the festivities.

MAYFIELD, Ky. – Thursday afternoon was just the latest in a series of frustrating events for the Mid-Continent University baseball team. With a threat of rain in the area, the Cougars hit the road for a double-header at NCAA Division II Oakland City University (Ind.)

Oakland City (13-22) took game one 8-4, but Mid-Continent (11-34) held a 7-1 lead with one out in the fourth inning of the second game. That is when the skies opened, washing out the contest less than one inning shy of becoming official, and the Cougars headed home with nothing to show for their game two efforts.

MURRAY, Ky. - The Mid-Continent University baseball team turned to Luke Deaton on Wednesday afternoon, looking to put the brakes on a five-game skid. Deaton was pitching well through four innings of play, but then the rains came.

With Murray State University (14-23) leading 1-0, a runner on first and one out in the top of the fifth, lightning in the area of Johnny Reagan Field led to a weather delay of one hour and four minutes, and after the interruption, the Thoroughbreds took control, defeating Mid-Continent (11-33) 7-0.
