MAYFIELD, Ky. - For nearly two-thirds of their match on Saturday, the Mid-Continent University soccer team (4-10-1, 0-5) hung with the Martin Methodist College RedHawks, but in the end, the Cougars could not prevent the RedHawks from claiming the TranSouth Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship.

Jonatas Polesello made five stops in goal for the Cougars, but Martin Methodist tallied a goal with just over 30 minutes remaining in the match, taking the 1-0 win from Mid-Continent, and with it, the TranSouth Regular Season Title.

The first half went by scoreless, but that is not to say there was a lack of action in the opening 45 minutes. Martin Methodist came out swarming, looking for a goal early, but Polesello was equal to the task. Despite putting only three shots on goal, the RedHawks blasted 16 shots at Polesello in the opening half, hitting both a post and a crossbar, but they could not find the net, and at intermission, the match remained scoreless. Polesello made two more stops early in the second period, before the RedHawks 20th shot finally broke the ice. Jonathan Cabale converted a feed from Amaury Barritault into what would be the game-winning goal, sending a knuckling shot past Polesello and into the bottom left corner of the net to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Knowing that a win would earn them the title, Martin Methodist shifted their focus to protecting the lead. Over the final 32:09 of the match, the RedHawks recorded just two shots, but they only allowed one attempt to the Cougars - a shot from Jonathan Alvarado that went wide with seven minutes remaining. From that point, Martin Methodist sealed the win with strong defensive play, keeping the ball out of the dangerous areas and recording the win 1-0.

Stephen Lunney (11-3) kept the Cougars off the scoreboard for the second time in a week, earning the victory and his ninth clean sheet of the season. Polesello (1-5-1) took the hard-luck loss in goal for the Cougars.

Mid-Continent will wrap up their 2012 season on Tuesday night, when they head south to Henderson, Tenn. to take on the Freed-Hardeman University Lions (6-10, 1-4). Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
