Women's Basketball - Sun, Feb. 10, 2013

MAYFIELD, Ky. - On a night when the Mid-Continent University women's basketball team honored two seniors for their time at Mid-Continent, the Cougars were hoping to get a positive result against Blue Mountain College. Unfortunately for Mid-Continent, the same issues that plagued the Cougars at Blue Mountain in January appeared on Saturday evening.

Mid-Continent (7-18, 0-5) allowed Blue Mountain (16-9, 3-2) to grab more than half of the Toppers' missed shots, and Blue Mountain used 16 second chance points and 22 points off their bench to take the win and the season series from Mid-Continent, 72-47.

Mid-Continent scored the game's first basket, taking the 2-0 lead, but Blue Mountain immediately bounced back. The Toppers took the lead with 17:12 to play in the first half, and they would not trail again, but Mid-Continent was able to draw even twice, tying the score at 9 with 15:23 remaining, and at 11 with 14:54 left in the first half. A 17-4 Blue Mountain run gave the Toppers a 13-point lead with 10:16 to play, and Mid-Continent spent the rest of the night chasing the game. Blue Mountain stretched their lead to 47-25 at the half, and in the second half, the story was very similar. Blue Mountain seemed content to keep the Cougars' deficit near the 20-point threshold, with their largest lead of the night coming at the 5:42 mark of the second stanza - a 27-point lead at 68-41, cruising to the win 72-47.

Stephanie Malone led the Cougars offensively with 20 points, and Natalie Taylor added 10 in the game as well. Breona Houston grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cougars, who made 18-of-60 (30%) shots on the night, including just 2-of-23 (8.7%) 3-pointers. The Cougars also struggled from the foul line, connecting on 9-of-16 (56.3%) attempts on the evening.

Mid-Continent will be back in action on Valentine's Day, traveling to Pulaski, Tenn. to take on the Martin Methodist College RedHawks (13-14, 2-3) at 6 p.m.
