NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 2013 season has gotten off to a slow start for the Mid-Continent University softball team. On Monday, the Cougars offense began to awaken, but a lack of timely hitting cost Mid-Continent in a pair of losses at Trevecca Nazarene University.
 
Mid-Continent (0-4) stranded 12 runners in the two contests, as Trevecca (2-2) picked up their first two wins of the season by scores of 5-1 and 11-1.
Lindsey Rucker and Natalie Papini found themselves engaged in a pitchers' duel through the first three and a half innings of the game, but in the bottom of the fourth inning, Trevecca broke through. with two outs in the frame, the Trojans took advantage of a Mid-Continent error, scoring twice to take the lead 2-0. Trevecca added three more runs in the fifth frame to stretch their lead to 5-0. Rachel Brueggeman picked up an RBI base knock in the top of the sixth inning to get the Cougars on the board, but that is all they were able to get, as Trevecca took the win, 5-1.
 
Rucker (0-2) took the tough luck loss for Mid-Continent, while Papini (1-1) tossed six innings and allowing one earned run on four hits. Brueggeman and Winsett each had two hits in the game.
 
Brueggeman started in the second game, and before she took to the circle, the Cougars staked her to the lead. Colby Smith picked up the third hit of the frame for the Cougars, driving in Bry Navarro and putting Mid-Continent ahead 1-0. From that point on, however, it was all Trevecca. Mid-Continent stranded five runners in the final four innings, and meanwhile, Trevecca plated 11 runs to take the win 11-1.
 
Brueggeman (0-1) took the loss while Lindsey Stephens (1-0) earned the win in the circle for the Trojans. Navarro had three hits for Mid-Continent, and Christina Day had a double in the game.
 
Mid-Continent will open their home schedule on Thursday, hosting NAIA #15 Lindsey Wilson College (7-0) for a double-header at 1 p.m.
