MAYFIELD, Ky. - Not having lights on a softball field can sometimes add unexpected drama to a game that might not otherwise be as interesting to a general fan. That certainly was the case on Monday afternoon for the Mid-Continent University softball team.

The Cougars (0-6) trailed Trevecca Nazarene University (4-2) late in game two of a double-header that looked like it might not become official before nightfall, but the Trojans were able to fend off a late Mid-Continent rally to take the game and the sweep as night fell on the ballpark. Trevecca won game one 5-2 before holding on in the second contest for a 7-5 win.
Trevecca opened the scoring in the first game, after a mental miscue from Mid-Continent. With two-outs in the inning, MacKenzie Leding of Trevecca rounded second base and found herself standing on the third base bag with teammate Lacey Grimes, but she was able to scramble back to second in time, leaving the bases loaded for Jordan Griner who cleared the bases with a looping double cown the right field line to put Trevecca ahead 3-0. Shelby Andrews added a two-out RBI single in the Trojans' fourth, and Griner followed with an RBI double to stretch Trevecca's lead to 5-0. Mid-Continent loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, and Alyssa Ybarra delivered a two-run double that pulled the Cougars to within three at 5-2, but Mid-Continent was unable to push across anything else in the game, despite having runners on in each of the last three innings, as Trevecca hung on for the 5-2 win.

Natalie Papini (2-1) threw six innings for the Trojans in earning the victory, and she allowed two earned runs on five hits. Colby Smith (0-2) yielded five earned runs on six hits in three and two-thirds innings of work, taking the loss for Mid-Continent, and Lindsey Stephens worked a scoreless seventh to pick up the save for Trevecca.

Ybarra belted three hits in the game, including the double, and Rachel Brueggeman added a double as well for the Mid-Continent offense.

The second game started out slowly, but again in the second inning, Trevecca got a pair of two-out hits to score three of their four runs in the frame, as the Trojans built an early 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second frame, Randi Eveans drew a one-out walk, and Courtney Woods followed with a hard grounder toward shortstop Lindsey Stephens that took a funy hop and rolled all the way to the fence for an RBI-double as Mid-Continent got on the board. After walks to Lindsey Rucker and Jessica Temple, Christina Winset bounced a single off the right foot of Trevecca pitcher Kelsey Kemp to pull the Cougars within two after two innings of play. Grimes (1) and Andrews (2) each homered in the Trevecca third inning, as the Trojans scored three times to push their lead out to 7-2, and Trevecca appeared to be in control of the game, but with night falling fast, things were just getting interesting.

Mid-Continent continued to put together long at bats in the third inning, but they came away empty, and Trevecca coach Ben Tyree took a gamble. Knowing that the game would not be official until the end of the fourth inning, he had three hitters all bunt in the top of the fourth in an attempt to speed the game along, and it worked momentarily, as the Trojans went down in order in the inning. The move, however, broke the Trojans momentum, and Mid-Continent siezed the opportunity to mount a comeback. Ybarra reached on an error to begin the bottom of the fourth, and three straight walks loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate in Anna Maziarka. Maziarka singled to left-center, and Marissa Nickerson reached on a fourth walk in the inning to pull Mid-Continent to within a margin of 7-5 with the tying runs in scoring position and the winning run on second base. Eveans followed, though, with a double-play ground-out that went 1-2-3 and erased Kelsey Tramel trying to score. Courtney Woods then stepped in and flied out to right field to end the game, and the Trojans held on to win 7-5.

Kemp (1-1) picked up the win for the Trojans, tossing three innings and allowing five runs - four earned - on three hits and eight walks. Rucker (0-3) took the loss for Mid-Continent, giving up seven earned runs on seven hits in two and one-third innings in the circle. Stephens (2) relieved Kemp in the fourth frame, retiring three of the four batters she faced in picking up her second save of the day. Five different Cougars scored runs (Ybarra, Temple, Winsett, Eveans, Woods), with five Mid-Continent players (Winsett, Tramel, Maziarka, Nickerson, Woods) notching RBIs as well.

Weather permitting, the Cougars are slated to open their 2013 TranSouth schedule on Tuesday evening in Henerson, Tenn., when they hit the road to do battle with the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions (8-1, 0-0). Game times are scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m.
